A BLEND OF CULTURES

Hi! My name is Nicolás León (/leˈon/ Spanish for 'lion').

I was born in 1986 in the beautiful sunny city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, (Canary Islands, Spain ). I grew up with a unique blend of two very different cultures thanks to my Canarian father and Finnish mother.

As a child, I was captivated by art. I loved drawing, painting, and molding dinosaur figurines from Play‑Doh. While my early skills were modest, my creativity & imagination knew no bounds.

A BLEND OF CULTURES

Hi! My name is Nicolás León
(/leˈon/ Spanish for 'lion').

I was born in 1986 in the beautiful sunny city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, (Canary Islands, Spain ). I grew up with a unique blend of two very different cultures thanks to my Canarian father and Finnish mother.

As a child, I was captivated by art. I loved drawing, painting, and molding figurines from Play‑Doh. While my early skills were modest, my creativity & imagination knew no bounds.

At the age of eleven, I relocated to Finland with my mother. Overcoming language barriers, I slowly integrated into a new life there.

During my junior high years, I became fascinated by computers, which sparked a deep interest in combining art and technology to solve problems creatively. This ultimately led me down the path of graphic design.

ADAPTING TO A NEW COUNTRY

I enrolled in Savo Vocational College to pursue a double degree program, earning both a high school diploma and a vocational degree in Audiovisual Communication.

My time at college was truly rewarding. I was incredibly proud to be accepted into the program, and I approached every class with a lot of enthusiasm and motivation. I knew I was on the right path.

After graduating in 2006, I enlisted in the army to fulfill my mandatory military service.

EDUCATION

During basic military training, a poster caught my eye. It advertised the search for recruits with skills in journalism, photography, and graphic design for Ruotuväki, the army's news magazine. Combining my duty with professional practice was irresistible, so I applied without hesitation.

After completing basic training, I was chosen to join the editorial team for the remaining seven months of my service. Working alongside my comrades was an unforgettable experience where we learned to collaborate under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

MILITARY SERVICE

After completing my military service, I took a year off to travel and build my first portfolio website. In 2008, I secured a full-time job at Suomen Valopalkki Oy — a large format printing company based in Lahti, Finland. This marked the start of my career as a graphic designer and print operator.

Throughout my extensive career, I've designed and produced thousands of print products, from retail advertisements to signage solutions, for clients in Finland and worldwide.

I have also developed technical expertise in operating and maintaining various large format printers and different finishing tools.
